It's just the kind of thing that makes good copy.
There was a similar, and simliarly minor, swine flu outbrake back in the late 70s, IIRC.
Then there was 'legionaire's disease.' The media loves plagues.
In our modern times, when some of the deadliest plagues have been eradicated, there's a fearsome thrill to the idea of a new one.
The media loves that sort of thing.
Get's folks to tune in to the 11 o'clock news.
